Here’s How to Find Purpose in Your Pain

Do you ever feel like life won’t let up—like you’re God’s punching bag? One struggle after another, and you start wondering if God has forgotten you. I’ve been there. Despite serving in a church, reading my Bible, and doing all the “right” things, I felt stuck in a loop of pain and disappointment. It seemed like God had stepped back, letting chaos take over.

David’s cry in Psalm 13:1 captures it perfectly: “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” It’s raw, it’s real, and maybe it’s exactly how you feel. But here’s the truth: even when God seems distant, He’s right there, working in the middle of the mess. Your pain isn’t meaningless; it’s part of a greater story that God is writing.

The Apostles Show Us How to Stand Firm in Suffering

Let’s look at the apostles in Acts 5. After being busted out of jail, they went right back to preaching in the temple, knowing the risks. The Sanhedrin—furious and determined—wanted them silenced. But instead of backing down, Peter boldly declared, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

That’s real courage. It’s not about being fearless; it’s about standing firm when fear tries to take over. The apostles knew that God’s plans couldn’t be stopped, even by powerful human threats.

Finding Purpose When Life Feels Out of Control

Life often feels like it’s spiraling, and we try to fix things on our own. But God’s control never wavers. Gamaliel, a wise Pharisee, reminded the Sanhedrin: “If this plan is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop it” (Acts 5:38-39).

Gamaliel’s wisdom reminds us that God’s purposes stand firm, no matter what. Your suffering doesn’t mean God’s lost control; it means He’s working in ways we don’t yet see.

How to Embrace God’s Sovereignty in Suffering

  1. Invite God Into Your Pain: Instead of just enduring your trials, ask God, “What are You doing in this season?” This simple question opens the door for His work, even when answers seem far off.
  2. Lean on Community: We’re not meant to suffer in silence. Share your burdens with others—whether it’s a community group, a mentor, or a friend. Let the church be the family that carries you when the weight feels too heavy.
  3. Shift Your Focus: When overwhelmed, move from asking, “Why is this happening?” to “How can God use this for His glory?” This shift helps you see beyond the pain to God’s greater purpose.

You’re Not Alone—God Is with You

The apostles rejoiced in their suffering, not because it was easy, but because they knew God was with them. Your pain can be a powerful way to experience God’s presence, His redemption, and His unwavering faithfulness. No matter what you’re facing, remember—God is with you.

Let your suffering testify to God’s sovereignty. Find the purpose in your pain, and let it point you and others back to His glory. Share your story, encourage someone else, and stand firm, knowing that God’s plans for you are unstoppable.
